Xonotic Is a Pretty Fun Game
I’ve always been going back and fourth on playing Xonotic. It’s a damn fun game, and a real party favor, as I’ve even managed to host a few LAN parties.
With how much Zoomers love their fast paced games, with no long term story (I’m guilty of playing Rougelikes all the time too), I’m surprised the Arena Shooter genre still cannot get a footing as a common game played. Whenever I open up the server browser, it’s DEAD dead! Only stable server is an instagib CTF 24/7 game. The HL2:DM community is more alive than this! (SOCAL #1!! BEST HL2:DM SERVER 2018!)
At work, since we revolve around open source, I’ve thought about trying to see if I could convince my boss to help with hosting a Xonotic tournament with our Uni’s Gaming Club. It’s a very unprofessional event, compared to the other things the company has hosted in the past, but my rationale behind it was for casual outreach. FOSS is seen as the nerdbob of the computing world, even though there are so many badass tools out there which don’t get the same notice as mainstream, proprietary software, only because there is no advertisements. We DID have some decommissioned workstations sitting in our back rooms for the longest of time, and I wanted to use them as rental machines during the event. Both to allow more people to experience the game, and to show as an example for how the game is able to run on anything. But, before I could make any moves, the machines were sent to surplus auction. Shame. :,(
I’ve also looked into modding the game, and it’s quite the process. I’ve never worked in QuakeC before, but I’m impressed by how the engine works by having the game itself as a compiled bytecode, which is then runnable on any machine. Those ID nerds were very forward thinking on portability.
